At the invitation of the Presidium of the Freie Universität Berlin, over a hundred colleagues and friends of Wolfgang Mackiewicz from across Europe and from FUB gathered for a surprise dinner party on 2 May 2008 to celebrate Wolfgang’s forty years at FUB. They were welcomed by Peter Lange, FUB registrar, and Wedigo de Vivanco, director of FUB’s External Relations Department. Those who had planned the event for over a year had another surprise in store. Wolfgang was presented with a festschrift, edited by CEL/ELC Board members Karen M. Lauridsen and Daniel Toudic.
Among those present were CEL/ELC Executive Committee members Anne-Claude Berthoud, Ole Helmersen, and Mike Kelly, Thomas Fraser (organiser of the CEL/ELC founding conference), Klaus W. Hempfer (former First Vice President of FUB), Elisabeth M Lillie (University of Ulster), Noël Muylle (Directeur général honoraire) and Régis Ritz (European University Association).
