Commissioner Orban visits Freie Universität Berlin
On 13 February 2009, Mr Leonard Orban, member of the European Commission responsible for multilingualism, spoke at a discussion meeting, which was attended by some 250 people.
The Commissioner was welcomed on behalf of Presidium of the Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) by the First Vice President, Professor Ursula Lehmkuhl. She was followed by the Commissioner, who presented the Commission's principal aims, policies and initiatives regarding multilingualism.
During the ensuing discussion, which was chaired my Matthias Hüning and Wolfgang Mackiewicz, the Commissioner responded to a large number of questions asked of him by FUB students and teachers, and by members of the general public, among them representatives of diplomatic missions and cultural institutes and of schools and universities in the Berlin-Brandenburg region. At the end of the meeting, the Commissioner was applauded enthusiastically. The discussion meeting was followed by a reception given by the Presidium, to which all participants in the meeting were invited. During the reception, the Commissioner conversed with a large number of individual participants, including students.
