Apart from the fact that a number of amendments had become necessary because of changes in the legal provisions in Belgium, the General Assembly was keen to extend the membership and to facilitate smoother operation. While under the old Articles membership was limited to higher education institutions and specialist associations based and / or registered in a European country, the new Articles (i) extend membership to enterprises, organisations and institutions which support the aims of the CEL/ELC, (ii) no longer limit membership to bodies based in Europea, and (iii) rule that individuals supporting the aims of the CEL/ELC can be admitted as associate members.
